According to a Forrester Total Economic Impact study, Azure Arc provides a 206 percent ROI over three years.

Businesses today build and run cloud-based applications to propel their operations forward. As these applications are developed, they must fully utilise the agility, efficiency, and speed of cloud innovation. However, not all applications and the infrastructure that supports them can be physically housed in the public cloud. As a result, 86 percent of businesses intend to increase their investment in hybrid or multicloud environments.
We’re building Azure to meet you where you’re at, so you can make the most of your existing investments. We also want you to be able to remain agile and flexible as you extend Azure to on-premises, multicloud, and edge environments.
Azure Arc meets these requirements. Azure Arc is a bridge that extends the Azure platform, allowing you to build applications and services that can run in datacenters, edge, and multicloud environments.
Forrester Consulting interviewed four organisations with Azure Arc experience for the 2022 commissioned study, The Total Economic ImpactTM of Microsoft Azure Arc for Security and Governance. These organisations serve global markets in the manufacturing, energy, and financial services industries. According to the data collected, Azure Arc demonstrated:
- Over three years, the ROI is 206 percent, with a payback of less than six months.
- IT Operations team members’ productivity increased by 30%.
- An 80% reduction in the risk of data breach due to unsecured infrastructure.
- Spending on third-party tools was reduced by 15%, resulting in cost savings.
The Forrester study provides a framework for organisations looking to assess the financial impact of using Azure Arc for infrastructure security and governance. Forrester discovered that using Microsoft Azure Arc to secure and govern non-Azure infrastructure alongside Azure resources can help organisations with hybrid or multicloud strategies gain productivity and reduce security risks.
Azure Arc’s single-pane view boosts productivity.
After implementing Azure Arc, the organisations in Forrester’s study reported a 30 percent increase in productivity from savings in time spent on routine tasks such as configuring and updating infrastructure, managing policies and permissions, troubleshooting and resolving issues, and other tasks that don’t directly drive business. IT teams can use Azure Arc to monitor, secure, and govern diverse infrastructure and applications from a single pane of glass in Azure, allowing them to be more agile, respond more efficiently, and free up time to serve business interests with higher-value tasks.
“We’re just making everyone’s lives so much easier so they can do other things. If there is a problem, you do not have to spend a week troubleshooting.” —Cloud Architect products, Energy.
The Azure portal allows for cost savings and infrastructure simplification.
Most businesses today run a mix of applications on-premises, in the cloud, and at the edge. These disparate environments frequently result in investments in multiple management tools tailored to specific technology platforms, resulting in tool sprawl and exorbitant costs.
Organizations could eliminate legacy management tools by moving to a single view of infrastructure and resources in the Azure portal enabled by Azure Arc, reducing licencing costs and eliminating costly on-premises management infrastructure. They are no longer bound by long-term contracts or capacity limits thanks to Azure’s flexible consumption-based pricing.
The Forrester study’s composite organisation saved $900,000 in year three by reducing spending on third-party tools by 15%.
“When I do dive in, I actually understand [our infrastructure] faster. So the advantage for me is that I have more visibility—I have to ask [the team] fewer questions. The [Azure Arc] dashboard is […] extremely simple.” —VP of Finance and IT.
Microsoft Sentinel and Microsoft Defender for Cloud modernise security operations.
Azure Arc enables the use of Microsoft security services such as Microsoft Defender for Cloud and Microsoft Sentinel across hybrid and multicloud environments, allowing organisations to combat rapidly evolving security threats with greater efficiency.
Forrester discovered that by implementing Azure Arc and Microsoft security services, the composite organisation reduced the risk of a data breach caused by unsecured infrastructure by 80%. Following the implementation of Azure Arc, the organisation identified noncompliant assets running on-premises or in edge environments and updated them to the most recent security standards. This saves hundreds of thousands of dollars that would otherwise have been spent on breach management.
“We gained real insights into our infrastructure, including infrastructure from [another cloud provider], using Azure Arc. This assisted us in identifying architecture [gaps] as well as controls to improve security compliance. [Using Azure Arc], we discovered that approximately 20% of our infrastructure was noncompliant.” —Deputy IT Director, Manufacturing.
